We thought the hotel was a great value for the price, but it is a VERY noisy hotel. Street noise is certainly to be expected in NY City, so that was a given, but there was very little buffer between rooms and the hallway. Otherwise, it was a nice room - not tiny like so many NY Hotels, and appointed with whatever we needed. It was very centrally located and we had a perfectly nice stay. We walked to Central Park, which was a bit of a long walk, and enjoyed the view of the Chrysler building out our window. The hotel staff was extremely friendly - especially by NY standards.

The Helmsley is located within easy walking distance to the theater district, Grand Central Station, Rockefeller Center, shops and excellent ethnic restaurants. The Concierge were knowledgeable and helpful, and knew what was going on in NY.

From the beautiful lobby to my lovely and comfortable room, I enjoyed my stay at the NY Helmsley. A woman traveling alone, I had my first night's dinner in the hotel restaurant with considerate yet attentive service. The food was good and the restaurant is attractive and comfortable.

The lobby is newly renovated.. however the rooms are not.. very dingy.. housekeeping is mediocre at best...

The New York Helmsley located on 42nd St. between 2nd and 3rd Ave. was incredibly convenient and very comfortable. Grand Central Station, the UN and the Chrysler Building are all only a couple blocks away. There were good restaurants in the area. We had a great lunch at the Capital Grille. After seeing a Broadway play on Saturday night we decided to walk back to the hotel. I would definitely stay there again!

Higly recommend this hotel, as I said the room was very clean, but compact. The beds were so comfortable, it were as if I was sleeping on a cloud. However, I would most of all would have liked a coffee maker in the room. The neighbourhood was very quiet and safe to walk at night. We were quite close to Grand Central Station, you could go there for a wonderful dinner or a drink late at night.

In an effort to appease the TV hungry masses, The Helmsley decided to stand a huge flat screen TV on the desk facing my bed. Said TV takes up the back half of the working space on the desk, which seriously disrupts my ability to use the desk as a work space. The bureau, which used to house the TV, now has a useless, gaping space. The thermostat does not function, but luckily the temp is just high enough to be (barely) comfortable enough. Everything else is as what one might expect in a highly rated hotel. I just can't get over the way they rearranged the room -- what, indeed, were they thinking? With the hundreds of other options, I won't choose The Helmsley again.

The hotel is in a great location...walking distance to many attractions and close to the subway. The staff was very friendly and helpful. However, the housekeeping was not at great and the pillows were painfully uncomfortable. Overall, the stay was wonderful and I would definitely stay again. Beautiful hotel!!!!

All was great except the pillows were so stiff it made sleeping uncomfortable. Otherwise, no problems.

We stayed at the Helmsley for 5 nights in March 2010 to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. The hotel is great - very central to everything and conveniently located on 42nd Street and is a short walk to major attractions such at the Empire State Building, United Nations Building, Grand Central Terminal, New York Public Library and Times Square. The hotel has undergone a recent refurbishment and is in great condition. Our room (King) was on the 26th floor and was quite large compared to NY hotels. After a lot of looking around online for a decent hotel that was reasonably priced, central to all attractions and in a good neighborhood, and the Helmsley didn't disappoint. We are already planning our next holiday to NY and would stay at the Helmsley again without hesitation.

The hotel was under renovation, but we knew this before our visit. The hotel was close to everything and was an enjoyable stay. The staff were friendly and helpful and tried to minimize the inconvenience of the remodeling. Would stay there again. ~Mary

Staff very accommodating, room very fresh and clean. Location excellent, especially for Broadway shoping and access to Port Authority. Only problem was the phone bill ! 15 calls, each less than 10 mins to Europe and some to Long Island were all treated as Long - distance! Got a phone bill for $582!! Was shocked as rate extortinate. After deep discussions with the Manager, we stated our case+ shock at this and she handled the situtation extremely well and brought the phone bill down to a reasonable rate. She left a very positive memory in our minds eye and have no problem recommending this hotel to anyone. Advice: definitely stay here but don't use the phone !

The hotel room was really nice, as was the staff. We have stayed here before and were disappointed that nothing was mentioned at the time of our reservation about the renovation of the lobby, bar, and restaurant areas. They were completely closed.

Did not notice at time of booking online that hotel is being extensively refurbished and only discovered on arrival that lobby did not exist! No dining room or any bar facilities other than room service. No reduction was offered despite being annual guests for some years. Room was clean but in need of update. Excellent location. Rather disappointed at indifference by staff to our predicament.

The NY Helmsley is under renivation but no worries. ON E 42nd St. - a great location. Price obviously discounted so if the lobby isn't a big issue while it's being spruced up, STAY!

hotel entrance is under construction - did not know this when booking at 8AM waited 15 minutes for elevator then took stairs

Great price to stay at a spacious, clean, comfortable room at The New York Helmsley. Location for us was great. The staff was helpful and pleasant. The only problems were the on going renovations, which we were aware of. Noise was not an issue, but it would have been nice to dine in the hotel. I believe renovations will be done in December. I would definitely recommend this hotel at the price we paid.

Hotel is rehabbing the downstairs so you need to hit the third floor for check in. VERY friendly staff. I got a king bed but in a smoking room. It wasn't terrible but non-smokers can smell it no matter what you spray and clean a room with. Bed was comfortable and a good sized room. Fine for business travel now - but if on vacation seek something less busy with reconstruction.

The hotel lobby was under construction but this was disclosed before we got there. The staff was very friendly and the room was great. The hotel was about 1 block from the subway which made it very convenient. I would use this hotel again and would recommend it. Once the lobby is completed, this hotel should be one of New York's best.

The staff could not have been more helpful or friendly...but they have some serious renovation going on. There is really no lobby to meet in as they are under construction. But the price was right, the room was clean, and what else do you need. It was the best deal I could find in NY fro the money. I would go back in a minute...at the same price!

The bathroom sink in our room dripped and was difficult to turn off. The shower was not easy to control.

The hotel was under lobbey construction, but we were forwarned. The room was quite comfortable and was within an easy walk to the train station and times square. My only complaint was there was no coffee maker in the room and no place to by a paper nearby.

PROS: Friendly, helpful staff. Relatively large (for NYC) and clean rooms. Convenient location, especially to UN and Grand Central. Comfortable beds. CONS: Lobby/restaurants still under construction. Street noise even from upper level rooms (windows not double hung). Bathrooms clean, but in need of upgrade/remodel--- plumbing fixtures were not in good repair; shower curtain seemed too small for shower.

The first floors of the hotel were under construction. It was noisy. My room was next to the elevator and so I heard it all night long. There was no restaurant during the construction, but could have ordered room service from somewhere they said. Room itself was nice and comfortable, but not well insulated. Heard the traffic all night.

Two light bulbs were burned out and one lamp had a broken switch. Staff did not appear surprised or interested. The room was small, no coffee maker, minimal amenities. Considering the price, this is a place to stay only when everything else is booked.

We were disappointed that the hotel was under construction and had no lobby, restaurant, etc. The rooms were nice and clean, and the staff was friendly. I would try it again when the construction is complete.
