Nice, big, clean room with a panoramic view over Hilo Bay and a balcony to enjoy it; we ate breakfast on our balcony every day. Convenient, free, covered parking and you need a car to get around on the Big Island; the covered part is important as it rains a couple of times every day in Hilo. Parks are adjacent. Guests need to understand: (1) this is […] a commercial hotel, not a resort--no organized activities, recreational or fitness facilities, etc.; (2) oceanfront isn't beachfront--Hilo Bay has a rocky coastline, no sand. Hotel restaurant features rather pricey buffet-style service; we don't care for buffets, but there are plenty of restaurants in all categories within a five minute drive. 더 보기

there was a mix up when i checked in - the receptionist wasnt much help i had to check on it myself- my name was mispelled by hotels.com when they booked me. also there was no hair drier in my room. i did not notice until 4am in the morning when i was getting ready for my business meeting.

The hotel is exactly what we were looking for - clean, peaceful and simple. Even though we were there on the eve of the Merrie Monarch Festival, everyone greeted us with aloha and we had a very pleasant experience. The rooms were simple, clean and comfortable.

This hotel offers basic essentials for a few nights stay. It is not a resort of any kind. But then, who would want to stay in Hilo more than 2 nights?

We paid the extra for an ocean view and it was amazing. It rained most of the time we were in our room, but it was still beautiful watching the rain on Hilo bay and hearing the birds. You can also people watch from here. In better weather, it would be easy walking distance to most things, but we ended up driving out for meals (don't miss Ken's for breakfast […] and Sombat's for Thai) and the Farmer's market and wandering town. Hotel room is larger than most mid-range hotels and had a refrigerator which we appreciated. Definitely not a new hotel and it definitely hasn't been refurbished in awhile, but it was clean and the staff were pleasant. Late (noon) checkout was also appreciated. 더 보기

Nice open atmosphere as you enter. Upgrading for the bay view rooms is well worth the minor extra charge. Parking was free. Restaurants were nearby.

A nice older hotel in the prime location of Hilo. The seaside view was very nice. It would have been fantastic if they had a sand beach to walk into the water and sun bathe. The low tide revealed lots of lava rocks to trip you. To find a sand beach you will have to stay on the west side of the big island.

Initially the property is located in a beautiful section of Hilo just directly off of the shore. Parking was easy to find and close to the lobby. The lobby and shops and restuarants were inviting. The check in staff was more than accomodating. It seemed I had made the right choice until we got up to our room. The rooms are outdated and disappointing. […] I had made it a point upon booking that I needed a refrigerator in the room. I was assured that all the rooms came with mini refrigerators until I was ushered into one that didn't have one to be found. When I contacted the front desk I was told that only ocean view rooms have refrigerators and I could rent one for $7 a day or perhaps be transferred to a room with a refrigerator for an extra $10 a day. I chose to change rooms even though I was travelling with a 6 year old, a 4 year old and a eight month old infant and even moving down the hall seemed a daunting task. The room I was given did have the refrigerator as promised, but it was just as old, the view was unimpressive, the bathrooms are outdated and look exactly like the bathrooms you can find in a cheaper $60 a night motel just down the street. I noticed the room was warm so I turned on the ac unit on low. It didn't cool the room. I turned it onto medium and waited for a couple hours. That didn't seem to cool the room much either. So I turned it on high only to have the entire thing rattle so loud that we couldn't even hear the television with it being on. We chose a hotter room just for the sanity of not having to listen to that noise all night long. The crib bed that I requested for my infant was a cheap fold out play yard that was very old. And all the hotel had to offer was a thin sheet to cover the pad which looked very worn and grimy. About that time I noticed a sign in the bathroom that said in the Castle Hilo Hawaiian's effort to help the planet they would only change the towels every FOURTH DAY! We weren't even given a choice to have the towels changed. 더 보기

Hotel was very nice and right on the bay. Room was good, but service was spotty. At check-in, front desk person was not very polite and made my family wait a few minutes to check in while she attended to other business. Then she took a personal call and proceeded to check us in without actually speaking to me. There are not a lot of choices in the Hilo area. By far this seems to be the best option. The Restaurant is great, parking is convienient. I do wish they had wi-fi in the rooms and the beds were more comfortable. All in all I am here 3 times a year and it meets my needs.

Had a nice stay. Room was clean and pleasant. Quiet area. Great view very nice staff. Waited for food. But we were on Hawaiian time so kinda expected. Would come back for certain Booked on Internet for a great rate

Based on the reviews I read, I was expecting to be miserable but the Hilo Hawaiian was a pleasant surprise. I would stay there again if I had to visit the Big island again, but I would avoid the seafood buffet. The breakfast buffet was very good though.

Pros: close to hotel, decent and well mannered staff Cons: grungy and old furniture, rooms and halls have musty and dirty look. My family and I didnt feel like sitting on the sofa, or the chairs as they had stains and were dirty. I wished they used faux leather - so much easier t clean and doesnt look as disguting

The maid was suburb. One shouldn't have to go looking for a coffee cup to be filled. I left no tip for that reason. The absence of an iron and ironing board in the room was noticed. All in all I would reccomend your hotel for the ambiance if nothing else. It fit our schedule.

Hilo has mediocre at best accomidations anyways and this hotel was no exception. We had to move after our first night because of our close proximity to the very noisy old elevator, but otherwise the hotel was comfortable and clean, but dated and lack-luster. The view of the bay was very nice. The restaurant in the hotel, however, was more than a disappointment, […] it was time wasted that I will never get back. To begin with we walked in to be ignored by the host at the front door (who turned out to be the manager) until one of the servers took us to our table. It appeared a little busy and noisy but nothing overwhelming. We waited quite a while before our server finally came by to take our drink order and waited even longer for her to return to take out dinner order. My wife and I both ordered entrees and my mother ordered a soup, my father wanted a dessert menu. A few minutes later the server returned to inform us that they were all out of soup and left a menu for my mother. After yet another overly-long wait, my mother ordered a salad. At this point we still had not received drinks nor a dessert menu for my father. We got our drinks a while later, and shortly after that we received our entrees.... still no salad and still no desert menu. The tables around us were experiencing the same service and were going to other tables and asking to borrow salt and pepper and ketchup. We had a another staff member refill our waters and hear our complaints. We were told the kitchen was "very backed up and very busy" when at this point we were one of maybe 10 tables left in the huge restaurant. Still we waited for the salad and the dessert menu. After 50 minutes of waiting the salad (which was lettuce, tomato and cukes... not rocket science) arrived and a dessert menu was dropped off. At this point we were fuming and people knew about it. The manager, who ignored us earlier, walked by our table 3 times before asking if everything was alright. After that my dad finally got a dessert 더 보기

The overall hotel was quite nice and our room was not bad, but the desk clerks were extremely snotty and rude when needing questions answered. We were not given much information at all upon check-in about the ammenities, etc.When I did try to ask polite questions the answers were impatient and clipped. Overall my stay was fine. The bed was not very comfortable. I arrived late to eat dinner in the restaurant but I was able to get something to eat in the bar. The views were very nice and I enjoyed walking down towards the banyan. Parking was free and easy. The bell staff were very friendly and helpful. I was dissappointed that their was no hair drawer […] or iron/board in the room. I am not used to staying at hotels these days who do not provide at least the hair drawer in your room. Everything was very satisfactory to excellent at this hotel. Room was clean, spacious and comfortable, housekeeping did a nice job, hotel location was great (beautiful view if you have a room on the bay side), hotel was quiet, and service was good. Free underground parking was great. There's also a beautiful park right next to the hotel. We were away […] from the hotel for most meals and did not eat there, so no comment on the restaurants. The only things that were just a notch below excellent were having free wifi only in the lobby (not in rooms - pay-for DSL service there) and the pool water was pretty chilly - clean but cold. 더 보기

This was not a satisfactory stay for us. The staff was pleasant, for the most part, although we felt we were intruding when we wanted a cup of coffee or a lunch, which was only available in the lounge. The room was at the elevator end of the hall and very noisy all night long. Housekeeping did not replace any items (shampoo, etc) that had been used. […] In the four days of our stay, the bathroom floor was not swept or cleaned. While there was coffee in the room, only caffeinated was provided.The restaurant offered only very expensive buffet meals for dinner ($40.00) and so we had to eat in the lounge with our four grandchildren around tiny bar tables from the bar menu (and at that the meal was close to $100.00 for the six of us. There was a buffet for breakfast, too, and it also was expensive ($18.00). Any meal vouchers we had were honored only at the buffets, not in the lounge. The hotel is on the other side of town from most, if not all, attractions. We will not be staying there again. 더 보기

This hotel is in a great location, close to downtown Hilo. The ocean view from our room was fantastic! The front desk and activity desk employees were very friendly and helpful. Our only complaint was that the hotel room was looking quite tired- bathroom mirrors losing their silver backing, lots of water damage on the ceilings, outdated wallpaper, worn […] carpet, etc. The room was clean, but looked like it hadn't been updated in many years. Older hotel with large rooms. Well maintained facility. View from bayside walkout was very nice. Desk staff was friendly and helpful. On-site free Parking. Very convenient to airport.

I had read all the caveats about the hotel and booked an ocean front room, the front desk was a bit slow and there was a coffee pot in the room and coffee but no cups. The room itself was fine, nothing special but certainly no problems. Everything was very clean. On arrival there was no one at the door, no one to park the car, no one to give instructions, […] no one to take the bags so that was odd. I am not sure why I gave it a 5 other than it is asking if I was satisfied. For the cost and great location and view it was more than worth it. This somewhat dated hotel has perhaps one of the best locations in Hilo, and the rooms are spacious with great ocean views and balconies. It's not much on the service side, and the food in the restaurant is, well, hotel food. Don't bother with the breakfast buffet - overpriced and lacking in quality and selection. Great friendly service at the front desk. The hotel is definitely in need of a renovation because it still has all the 80's flair... Clean room with decent amenities and a good location relatively near downtown Hilo.

Very uncomfortable beds and pillows. Had to get a differnt room due to noisy AC. Restaraunt is overpriced. Service is OK, rooms are clean, so nothing terrible, especially for one night. Don't think I stay there again

I rented three double rooms for one night in January 2012. The hotel condition, room condition, service and price were much better than I expected given what you can find in Hilo on the Big Island, Hawaii. I have stayed at a couple of other hotels in Hilo recently, and this one is close to the lowest price and far better than the others. The building […] is 60's era and appears to have been repainted, new carpet etc recently. Beds comfortable, but standard rooms have double beds, not queen size. I will stay there again. We typically stay over one night in Hilo when we visit the Volcano National Park. It is very difficult to find a place to stay that is reasonably priced and not a dump in Hilo. This hotel is a happy exception to the rule. 더 보기

The hotel is ok but slightly tacky and dated. Staff were not super helpful just ok. There is nothing to do close by the hotel but that is the town in general. Hilo is very quiet, has nice beaches but that's about all. Not over impressed but not awful.

Not a lot of great hotels to choose from in Hilo. We stayed here after a day at Volcanoes Park. As others have mentioned here, the lobby area is nice and the Queen's Court restaurant was recently renovated and good. The rooms, however, were dated and worn out. We did have a flat screen TV and good cable. For a one night stop over, it is fine, especially […] for the price. If you're there on a weekend, try the Queen's Court restaurant buffet there. The executive chef was very accommodating and friendly and there were some nice entree selections to choose from. 더 보기

This is an older but decently maintained hotel, overlooking Hilo Bay. Spring for the bay view rooms, totally worth the few extra dollars! The room size was down right palatial compared to the cruise ship sized rooms we came from at Waikiki. Nice size. You have to ask for the basics though, like an iron and a hair dryer, but they do come at no extra […] charge! Mattress was very soft, and I like a firmer bed. Food at the restaurant is second rate and expensive. Not impressed at all. VIews from room lanai beautiful. Overall about the best you can get in Hilo.... 더 보기

Arrived late evening. Very unwlecome reception and who was more insistent about how much they would fine a "smoker" than what the hotel had to offer. The bed linen had not been changed - that was more than obvious (wont go into detail). being late from travel, we kept some clothes on and decided to lay on top. In addition, the counterpain was bry-nylon […] and has not been washed or refreshed for so long that its smell filled the room on entry. Hotel is very tired and out of date and run down. Showers hot but antiquated. Service in the restaurant was bruske. Food adequate only but fits the price. Convenience to Hilo Downtown - it's a 5 minute drive but not an easy walk due to busy main highways, despite website indicating it is. It's used by the big coach companies who presumably subject their guests to one nights stay and move on. Nobody is perfect but this hotel was less than adequate and we wished we had never booked it for so many reasons. 더 보기
