The clock outside the train station is fantastic. It is a 'cuckoo' clock, but instead of a cuckoo it is a traditional Japanese character (akin to an Emperor I suppose) with a 5 minute long sequence which tells a short story. I saw it at 18:00. Do see

Narita is a great little town for a layover. They have a nice little downtown walking area with restaurants and stores that cater mostly to tourists. However, it is pretty quiet on weekdays. I'm sure it is much busier on weekends.

We liked Narita. We visited Naritasan Shinsoji Temple, lovely four hours wandering around with meal in traditional tatami restaurant...then enjoyed shops, bars, restaurants on kilometre or so street between temple and JR station.

Train from hotel and airport to the city of Narita is easy about 8 min away and 330 yen. The temple in Narita and the surrounding grounds are beautiful! Little food stands line the street entering the temple

If you head to the right out of the station and walk along omotesando street you will get to a shopping area with lots of restaurants many which specializes in eel dishes.

Honestly I think Narita is a hidden gem. It's got the smalltown feels and the walk around the shrine is very quiet and calming compared to the usual tourist spots.

Narita has a lot of Tourists most have basic knowledge of English. Or they will try their best . The city has great shopping at the Aeon mall where Tourists tend to shop at even at layovers. If you want cultural there's the big temple to visit.
"We stayed one night in the hotel with family. Every thing was great, shuttle bus, check in process, the staff, rooms ... The only problem is that there was no milk in the breakfast menu . "
