Wonderful inn for a weekend away
Yamagishi is a solid choice for a traditional ryokan experience. The room was large for Japan, and the food was quite good and satisfying. There was always plenty of dishes and many were delicious. This area is wonderful and the inn's location is excellent. It's right by a tour bus stop that takes you all around the lake area, and a Lawson's convenience store is next door for anything you might need. We were able to communicate with the staff in English and Chinese, and they were always ready to please and help us. We felt welcomed. They will shuttle you to the downtown/station as needed. When you arrive, just go to the tourist info office and tell them the hotel name. A driver will be there very soon to take you to the inn. We had the Japanese style room with shower, with a lake view. Lovely view. Since there were two of us, we ourselves doubled up our futons at night so we had a bit more padding to sleep on. We slept well. I have some trouble with my leg so it wasn't easy to get up and down into the low seating that was available, so these kinds of ryokan are not the best for someone with limited mobility. I made out all right though and enjoyed the experience. I didn't ask for a higher chair but I bet there was something available if I had asked. The prices are high here during popular times of the year. Given the limited choices and prices that are available, I was very glad that I opted for the Yamagishi. It's an older place but clean and well-maintained.
