A hidden gem...

Very clean comfortable rooms, and very friendly service from all of the staff, especially Adele who just seemed to be everywhere! Both our evening meal and breakfast were good quality with plenty of choice.

8/10 Very good

Overall the accommodation is very good, the only criticism I would have is with the food portions. There has been a noticeable reduction in portion size over the past couple of years, which is a real shame as value for money in the restaurant was previously excellent

One night stay

Very friendly staff, very clean spacious room, great choice of drinks and food, big tv in the room

8/10 Very good

Comfortable but some early morning traffic noise

The rooms of the guest house were comfortable and the pub served good food (although the portions seem to have shrunk in recent times) The only general criticism would be the noise from the road outside, traffic is fairly constant through the night and picks early in the morning. Not a problem if you're leaving early but not ideal if you were hoping for a more leisurely start to the day

Nice hotel with good food.

Nice room, decent size. Good food in the pub downstairs although service was a little slow. Great location next to the river.

Clean comfortable room . Good food and nice staff. Would be helpful to advise that there is no lift as we booked a twin room with stair only access which was a bit difficult with my mum who has mobility issues

Fantastic staff

Super friendly staff, and as such they made the stay very welcoming indeed. The hotel needs some updating and repairs, for instance windows need replacing and such like.

2/10 Poor

Probably the 3 worst nights sleep I’ve ever had. On arrival room 7 was absolutely roasting and remained so for the following 3 days, to compound this, the heated towel rail in the bathroom had been left on. The fan provided did nothing and wasn’t powerful enough to blow a tissue off the bed, even slept with 2 on, having borrowed my mates from next door in room 6 which was amazingly cooler than my room!!! All the 2 fans did was give me a noisy hot room! The window only opens about 4”. Staff could only say that the building is listed so air con can’t be fitted and that a few people had complained about the fans. Upon checking out this morning, Kyle on reception said I should leave a review of my poor stay on Expedia, through whom I booked this trip and then he could issue a refund. I never leave reviews, but this stay really has left me shattered and ruined the trip. Regards Craig Shaw.

Room was spacious and looked like in the photos. They do have a big problem with damp but this only really affected the asthetics and didnt affect our stay. The room looks freshly decorated.

Excellent family stay!

Lovely big family room with original features - the kids loved the original parts of the old stable still visible on the room! Very warm and toasty, but with in room thermostat. Speedy check in and we were even shown to the room so we could see how the keypad works for getting in after hours. Really friendly staff and very reasonably priced breakfast - only £2.50 for kids! Big car park and so quiet, we didn’t hear anything all night.

Potentially Beautiful hotel

Its a lovely place but after travelling 3 hours to see family before the leave for the US i was a bit sad that the family area was very dirty especially the wooden toy blocks, also tried ordering on the app and stated most food wasnt available but was at the bar, the room in general was ok but very dusty and the bathroom had mould on the walls, also there was only 2 teabags in the room and one towel between the two of us, the reception was quite far from the room and we have accessibility issues and there was no phone to call down to ask.

6/10 Good

Nice location and grounds, could do with an update

A nice location set in a large scale pub restaurant with nice grounds. The rooms are comfortable but lack ventilation, do get very hot and stuffy in the night, especially if you’re a family in one room, like us. The cleaning was poor sadly. Hairs and bugs in both the bathtub and sink, stains in the toilet and thick dust on most things in the room. Check in was fine except we did not get the family room that we booked specifically. I don’t think I would have booked otherwise but travelling with a baby we couldn’t find an alternative at late notice.

Great stay!

A fantastic stay! Arrived around 9pm after a long day at Alton towers to a very warm and friendly welcome from Georgia & Jamie. Georgia showed us to our rooms and was very thorough. Breakfast we were looked after by Sammi who was so understanding & helpful with our breakfast needs (me a veggie, my teenager a fussy eater and o/h on the carnivore diet!) when it came to pay the bill, we questioned the price due to a quoted price on our booking which was confirmed on the phone before our trip! Tracey the manager could not have been more helpful and we left it with her to look into for the day. The following morning we came for breakfast, to sammi already making our drinks as we had the morning before. (What a service!) I spoke with Tracey further about the bill questioned and she had resolved things for us with head office. Truly a fantastic stay and a very well cleaned and presented room as I understand thanks to Charlotte. Would highly recommend

Maybe never again…..

Unbearably hot in room, literally slept under a wet towel as the room had no air on and windows that opened a few inches. Breakfast was quite possibly the worst I have ever experienced, a full English with toast 10mins before the rest and when that came it was inedible. If a chef can’t fry an egg…….

6/10 Good

Booked twin bedded room and found it to be very large and actually partially meant to be accessible with emergency pull cords, toilet rails etc. However showering was in the bath and no grab rails for anyone needing accessible shower, and no option to wash using basin in bathroom as it was the size of one hand. The carpet was pale and showed up stains. Very odd room. Also another locked door around which daylight was visible that led somewhere. Therefore draughty. Hadn't realised the property was on a busy A road which the room faced and while not constant traffic it was noisy. As was nearby east midlands airport traffic. Might not bother someone used to traffic noise. Check-in by manager was friendly. Reported at checkout that there had been no hot water in the basin, no hand soap left in the hand soap dispenser and forgot to mention the dead lightbulb in the room so lighting was poor. Stayed at the Blue Jays Marston's the week before which was much better and prices similar.

It was a wonderful stay, friendly staff, and a great pub. Food was great. My room was larger than you normally get and the facilities were good.

Nice place, plenty of parking!

Lovely welcome on arrival / checkout. The room was rather clean although could’ve done with some TLC in the bathroom / storage cupboard. It did get rather warm in the room so a better fan / aircon would be fantastic! Overall lovely place and I’d stay again for sure, the bar sold some lovely gins and the service was excellent. Thanks so much!

Amazing place to stay!

We had a great stay! The family room we had was massive and perfect for what we wanted. It was very, very hot in the room with no way of cooling it down! We really struggled to sleep. We were given 2 fans, but they just blew the hot air around, it was unbareable. BUT because it's an old building we understand there is not a lot that could be done and they can't help the weather, but maybe portable air conditioning units might be worth considering. Also we had problems with the TV, we only had BBC channels, spoke to staff several times, they tried to help, but they admittedly didn't really have a clue, but they still tried to help, which we appreciated, they said someone was called out and fixed it while we were out, but it wasn't fixed, so we just gave up. Breakfast was amazing! Choice of food was great and quality brilliant. All the staff were lovely and friendly, they did try their best to help when needed, even if they weren't too sure on something. We would not hesitate to stay again, just maybe not if we know it's going to be during a hot spell! The place is lovely and clean, very quiet and full of character. You won't be disappointed!
