We loved Athens. It's full of history, art and culture and our early February visit meant that we could easily secure reservations at good restaurants, visit the Acropolis on a beautifully sunny - but not hot - day and avoid queues. Highly recommend

Athens is incomparable as an important, vibrant, eclectic international city. The historical relevance is literally layered one on top of the next....one cannot fully comprehend or appreciate the evolution of humankind without the context of Athens.

Fabulous city to visit! Highly recommend tours or use Rick Steves Europe App. We used at Acropolis-made the experience amazing. Recommend going early in the morning to avoid long lineups. Hop on/hop off bus terrific. Plan to return to tour coastal.

Athens is a sprawling modern city with many grungy, ageing neighborhoods. The best travel experience is staying in scenic older neighborhoods like Plaka or areas south and west of the Acropolis where walking is a joy. Nefeli is in the "sweet spot".

We bought the multi site ticket for the Acropolis but all the sites were discounted in the winter months, so we didn't actually save any money with this, definitely worth it in the summer. Eating and drinking options are great for all budgets.

This area of Athens was very authentic with cobbled streets, street cafes, restaurants &bars. Easy access to the Acropolis and other historical sites. Recommend Plaka as an area to stay in as it feels safer & is more attractive than other areas.

Don't just head for the traditional tourist areas. One of the best meals I had was in a small cafe frequented by locals in a residential neighborhood in Kerameikos. Also if you are able to, walk everywhere there are so many hidden gems to see.

Being an American I'm used to handrails everywhere-it's a safety issue. I have 2 reconstructed knees along with a heart issue and having handrails around monuments/ruins is helpful so I can enjoy all that Athens and Greece have to offer.

Love how everything in Athens was close together. We could see all the ruins within a day or two. Every street you take seems like there's something to be found which is really cool. acropolis was also amazing to see from afar and up close
"This was a family trip with my wife and two sons. The room was spacious enough to comfortably accommodate our four large suitcases, which we packed for a three-week stay in Europe. A standout feature was the presence of two full bathrooms—one of which had a double shower—making our morning routines smooth and hassle-free.
That said, there were a couple of disappointments. The biggest letdown was that the pool, which had been a deciding factor in our booking, was closed for repairs. Since we were visiting in the heat of summer, we had hoped to use it for some midday relief. When we mentioned this at the front desk, the response was, “It’s posted on our website.” Because we had booked through Expedia, they seemed detached from our concern, citing previous complaints but offering no resolution.
The second issue was breakfast. While the quality of food was excellent, the cost—48 euros per person—felt excessive unless you’re being served salmon and caviar. Staff acknowledged others had voiced similar concerns, but the response was essentially, “Sorry, that’s the price.”
The hotel itself is pleasant, quiet, and just a 10-minute cab ride from major attractions. But without access to the pool, I likely would have chosen the Athens Gate instead—comparable in comfort and location, and about 20% less per night."
"Great hotel centrally located with amazing view of Acropolis. Breakfast buffet was wonderful and our suite was fantastic. Staff were very nice and this was a great value!"
