Enjoyable Stay
A comfortable and cost effective option. However what really made my stay was the friendly and helpful staff especially Paula and Jackie.

A good choice
We used to take our children here years ago on riverside trips and were really pleased by our four night stay. Nice clean room with very big bed, relaxing pub, good food and a quiet location with plenty of free parking space. Staff are nice and helpful. We'll be back.

6/10 Good

Massive carpark at the front and back. Check in at the side of the bar The room was up a flight of stairs and you need a code to get into the corridor. The room was a good size as was the bathroom. Quite drab and worn looking decor, lots of repair jobs, no headboard but just marked walls as seen in photos! The bed was ok Wifi is good The shower was ok Evening meal was limited menu due to a burst water pipe in the restaurant! Went for the chicken and mushroom pie Very overcooked pie with rather tough pastry. Good size portion Not bad value. Breakfast is not included but can be added if wanted. Location right opposite a river with some nice walks. Not much else close by though. Would stay again if there was nothing else close by.

Nice location
The room was comfortable. I ate in the restaurant, which was pleasant but my food was very late. When I chased, they had. An explanation - there was no coleslaw. I didn't want any anyway and would have appreciated the opportunity to let them know before my stomach thought my throat had been cut...! I was disturbed very early because of a burst pipe. It didn't affect me or my room, luckily. I think it's a nice hotel l and well placed for m my business trips. I will visit again and give them another shot. The staff were pleasant and tried to be helpful.

6/10 Good

I have stayed at two Marston Inns before and this one was different! The rooms are very old, well decorated but had not been properly cleaned. There were large cobwebs on my ceiling that had obviously been there for a long time. The staff are very friendly and seem to be rather obsessed about reviews. The food was rather overcooked and dry and the service, especially at breakfast was very slow. The location is superb.

We had a lovely time!
I stayed at The Unicorn with my 6 year old daughter for 2 midweek nights in August. The staff were amazing, especially Jackie and Hannah. The evening meal was great value and the continental breakfast was delicious! The bed was the most comfortable I think I've ever slept on. The building itself does need a little tidying up. The seals on the shower were a little grubby and some of the paintwork and carpets in the rooms were looking tired. The bar and food areas were lovely though. We had no problems getting our electric car charged and the little climbing frame in the beer garden round the back kept my little one entertained for ages.

Good hotel with a nice view
We were pleased with our stay. We only stayed for a night. The food was nice, the bar/restaurant was busy but we still got our food reasonably fast. The view was beautiful. Shame we had no time to walk around. It was easy to find and there was plenty of parking.

A disappointing stay.
Firstly, the beds were incredibly comfortable and I had the best nights sleep! Unfortunately the hotel itself is in need of some repair and maintenance so it looks very tired and dated. The place was very busy but only had 3 staff which meant a long wait for drinks and food. The area in which the hotel is situated was beautiful and the canal stunning.

Welcoming staff and good food.
Nice stay at the Unicorn. Food was tasty. The bathroom wasnt the cleanest- hairs in the bath! The staff were very welcoming and friendly. The place could do with a revamp- starting to look tired.

A Few Small Niggles
Have stayed in The Unicorn many times in the past and have been very satisfied however this particular room lacked in a few small things. One side of the double bed did not have any surface to place personal items such as watch, phone and wallet or cash etc. Because of the exceptional large bed there was not enough room for a bedside cabinet on that side but maybe a small shelf would be handy. Also one side of the bed had a light switch but it didn’t appear to do anything, I would have expected it to switch off the main light (the only light in the room) instead of having to use the main wall switch on the other side of the room and stumble back to the bed in the dark. That same side of the bed had a just one single socket but it was not a standard 13amp socket but a round pin one which was unusable leaving the room a little short on useable wall sockets. Just these small negatives, if sorted, would improve the stay immensely. Having said that we will gladly be back again to enjoy the fabulous riverside location and friendly staff.

4/10 Fair

As at 18 May 2024 this hotel has a 4 star rating and an 8 guest score on Expedia. Because of that rating I paid a very high tariff for the quality of accommodation actually provided. This hotel has 2 star accommodation. My room didn't even have a bedside lamp. Somehow the star system has been gamed here.
