Stockbridge Market is a weekly market event in which vendors from all over the area offer their wares, with a focus on delicious food. You'll find a variety of fresh ingredients that let you try your hand at cooking, but you can also find fully prepared meals to enjoy. While many of the offerings are notably Scottish, you'll find an international selection of cuisine, including French food and more exotic flavours from Japan and India.

This market offers a notably different experience than your average supermarket. Not only will the unique selection allow you to try new things you wouldn't normally find, but you can talk to the producers and know exactly from where every last ingredient in any given item is sourced.

Stockbridge Market highlights

The highlights of the Stockbridge Market are always the food. All of the food is local, but it comes in quite a few different forms. You'll find traditional recipes hailing from the UK and France, along with others from lands much farther away. Olives are popular, as are varieties of meat and fish. If you're a fan of cheese, you'll find plenty of the French variety on offer, along with delicious desserts like crepes and cakes.

If you're looking to taste something a bit more exotic, you won't have to look far. Indian street food is popular here, along with Japanese cuisine that includes sushi and other favourites from the Asian island nation. You'll also find foreign speciality drinks like artisanal beers, as well as a variety of Scottish brews.

Stockbridge Market history

The Stockbridge Market in its current iteration is relatively recent, as it was established in 2011. Stockbridge's history, however, goes back further with the Old Stockbridge Market. This historical market began in the early 19th century after several structures were erected to create room for vendors and traders to sell their wares. This market operated for 75 years and closed in 1906.

After the old marketplace closed down, the structures were preserved as a category B listed building, and you can still see the Greek doric columns and gas lamp fixtures. You can visit the Old Stockbridge Arch and trading area with just a 2-minute walk from the modern marketplace.

Good to know when visiting the Stockbridge Market

The Stockbridge Market is only open on Sundays, and the actual traders present will vary each week. You can check the market's website to see which vendors will be present on upcoming Sundays, and you can peruse items from dozens of vendors in the online market.

Being in Stockbridge will put you close to several other exciting Edinburgh attractions. Less than a mile away, you'll find the Scottish National Gallery and several of its accompanying museums showcasing the best of Scottish and international art. Edinburgh Castle is just a short trip south from the market, which takes about 5 minutes by car and 10 minutes by bus.
