We enjoyed a very good stopover on the way back from Cornwall at the Castle and Ball. It has all the character of an historic inn, though this does mean there are quite a lot of steps and stairs and creaky floorboards, but the receptionist was quick to offer us help with our luggage and in fact we found our room very quiet (we were at the back, so not overlooking the High Street) as well as clean and spacious. General decor and condition ( carpets etc) not the most swish or up to date, but we prefer character to the bland sameness of chain hotels. We enjoyed our evening meal which is from the same Greene King menu we have experienced elsewhere, but offers a good choice of dishes at reasonable cost, and the clever idea of mini- desserts if you don't want a whole large one at the end of your meal
.
Parking was easy behind the hotel, and free to residents on registration at Reception. Marlborough is a lovely old town, prosperous, with some good shops along the High Street. World Heritage site, Avebury, is a short drive away.
Thoroughly recommended.
