Top neighborhoods in Rome

Rome Historic Centre

Enclosed by Aurelian Walls, this UNESCO-listed historic district boasts numerous museums, including the Capitoline Museums and Scuderie del Quirinale. Well-connected by public transport including the Roma Termini and Roma Ostiense stations which are nearby.

Trastevere

Narrow cobbled streets lined by ancient houses give this area a charming character. Enjoy lively pubs and restaurants at night, while being close to international academic institutions and the River Tiber.

Monti

Monti's cobblestone streets weave between ancient Roman ruins and medieval buildings, creating a living museum that's both historic and hip. Discover treasures like the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore with its dazzling golden mosaics and the spectacular classical sculptures of Palazzo Massimo. Duck into charming piazzas where locals sip espresso, or browse the indie boutiques and artisan workshops along Via del Boschetto. Traditional trattorias serve perfect plates of carbonara alongside trendy wine bars where aperitivo hour brings the neighborhood to life. The Metro B line at Cavour station connects you seamlessly to Rome's highlights, though the joy of Monti is wandering its narrow streets on foot. Boutique hotels in converted historic buildings offer the perfect home base for exploring.

Prati

Prati gives you the perfect taste of real Roman life without ditching the good stuff. Walk tree-lined boulevards to discover upscale shops along Via Cola di Rienzo, then duck into a cozy trattoria where actual Romans eat lunch. The Vatican Museums and majestic Castel Sant'Angelo sit at your doorstep, but you'll enjoy them without the chaotic tourist energy. Getting around couldn't be simpler with Metro Line A connecting you to Rome's highlights in minutes. Elegant boutique hotels occupy converted early 1900s buildings, complete with wrought-iron balconies and ornate facades. The neighborhood buzzes with sophisticated wine bars and local cafes perfect for people-watching and authentic aperitivo culture.

Testaccio

Testaccio serves up Rome's soul on a plate without the tourist fanfare. This working-class district keeps it real with its famous market where locals haggle over artichokes and pecorino. Monte Testaccio, a hill made entirely of ancient pottery shards, sits alongside the former slaughterhouse buildings that now house cutting-edge art exhibitions. Traditional trattorias dish out authentic Roman cuisine like cacio e pepe and offal specialties that won't break the bank. Getting around is a breeze with the nearby Piramide Metro station and frequent buses connecting to central Rome in minutes. Apartment rentals in ochre-colored buildings give you a genuine slice of neighborhood life.

Rome and related destinations

Toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain and legend promises your return to this eternal city. The Colosseum stands as a magnificent ruin where you can almost hear ancient crowds roaring. Vatican Museums house artistic treasures culminating in Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel, where necks crane upward in collective awe. Spanish Steps offer perfect people-watching while enjoying gelato that makes commercial ice cream seem like a sad compromise. Piazza Navona's baroque fountains provide theatrical backdrops for espresso sipping. The Pantheon's perfect dome still defies architectural logic two millennia later. Even Rome's ordinary corners reveal extraordinary fragments of history – ancient columns casually incorporated into medieval buildings as if history were simply a practical building material.

8/10 Good
"If I could have rated them a 4.5, instead of a 4, I feel that it would be more appropriate. We stayed at this hotel after a transatlantic flight, and as a stop over prior to taking a cruise. We chose the hotel due to its proximity to Roma Termini, and the fact that the rooms had AC. Check-in was quick and efficient. We were given a room on the 2nd floor, and had a welcome bottle of wine and water,, a nice touch. There was a learning curve for the lights and AC. Our room was set to 23, and we couldn’t adjust it. A quick call down to the front desk, and it was dropped to 20. Shortly after that I realized that I needed to put my key in the slot by the door, and then I was able to control the AC and all the lights. Some reviews mentioned being able to hear a lot of street noise. I could only hear outside noise from the bathroom. The bedroom was quiet. Our only complaint was that we had requested an extra pillow from the front desk prior to going out for dinner, but never received it. The bed was a little firm for my liking, but I understand some people like firm mattresses. On the whole, this place was perfect for our needs. A five minute walk (with luggage) from Roma Termini, a clean air conditioned hotel, in an area that I felt safe in. We’re booked again post cruise, prior to flying home, and am looking forward to the stay."

"The room was clean and the bathroom was a good size. I liked that they had mirror in both the bathroom and in the bedroom making it easier for multiple people to get ready in the morning. The staff was helpful and was able to get us into our room prior to the set check-in time. Convenient location with restaurants nearby. It was always easy to get a taxi from the front entrance."

"Very helpful and pleasant staff. This hotel has an on-site restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The breakfast included with the hotel booking was very good. We had dinner here two nights, and all four of us loved our meals. The outdoor seating area was very pleasant. The hotel is a little bit of a hike from the center of Rome, but their shuttle service was good. We would return to this hotel if back in Rome."

Fabulous Village

Fabulous Village

10/10 Excellent
"Overall. It’s wonderful. It’s a nice change from hotels with a bit more space. It has a nice park and the pool area is great. The pool makes the whole place worth it. It’s a great way to cool down. The staff are friendly and kind. Zero complaints about i. The only complaints are: There is zero way to contact them via phone if you need to. You’ll get in an AI loop and then hung up on. The pool is only open from 10AM-8PM. It’s too hot in Rome to have such limited hours. Check in takes forever and the only benches are in the sun. And people are smoking non-stop at the pool in your face and your kids faces - especially when you are in the chairs at the pool. It’s 2026 - it should really be non-smoking. It’s disgusting."

This period offers great value for money, making it a perfect choice for travelers on a budget who want to experience Rome's timeless charm without stretching their finances.
  2. Look for last-minute deals on Hotels.com: You may discover hotel deals to Rome by checking out the DealsOpens in a new window section on Hotels.com, where discounted rates may be available close to your travel date. Additionally, the Smart Shopping tool available via the app lets you compare hotel prices and amenities, so you’re more likely to see a price drop or room availability alert before booking your getaway.
  3. Be flexible with dates: Prices may vary depending on factors like the hotel's location, star rating, and time of year, so being flexible with your travel dates could help you save on your stay at a Rome hotel. For those interested in unique experiences, boutique hotels might offer a more personalized stay and potentially better value. When you book with Hotels.com, we'll inform you if the price for your chosen dates is above or below average, and if it's on the higher side, we may suggest alternative dates that could help you find a more favorable deal.
  4. Consider your location: Hotels near the city center generally cost more, but thanks to Rome’s outstanding public transportation, you might find a more affordable independent hotel further out that's still well connected. For those interested in exploring alternative, less crowded neighborhoods or even lesser-known nearby cities, you can usually find excellent value for money. Opting for these alternative destinations might offer a more authentic and budget-friendly experience.
